Asbestos only becomes dangerous once it has been disturbed, releasing harmful fibres into the air that can then be inhaled. In its various formats, air monitoring procedures test for respirable airborne fibres in the air, typically in areas where asbestos is in poor condition or where it is being removed. Air monitoring also ensures control measures are effective when working with or removing asbestos containing materials and can provide quantitative analysis of the associated risks. Below are various forms of air monitoring that can be applied where necessary.

PERSONAL EXPOSURE AIR MONITORING

This format of air monitoring tests the air in a person’s breathing zone to determine their likely exposure to respirable airborne asbestos fibres. It also ensures that all personal protective equipment is sufficient and that control measures are adequate.

Prior to work that could disturb known asbestos containing materials, background air monitoring may be conducted to determine if other fibres are present in the air. This method involves testing the air for respirable fibres, seeking to ascertain whether a problem exists before any removal work begins.

ENCLOSURE LEAK MONITORING

During work with asbestos inside an enclosure, leak monitoring may be conducted to verify the implemented control measures. Such monitoring tests the air outside an enclosure, highlighting possible breaches. This reassures the client and protects people situated nearby from asbestos fibre release.

Following the non-licensed removal of asbestos, reassurance air monitoring will test the air for respirable asbestos fibres to confirm that residual concentrations are below the control limit of 0.01 f/cm3. This kind of air monitoring tests whether asbestos has been sufficiently removed. It is hoped that subsequent results reassure duty holders that buildings are safe for reoccupation once again.
